Thank You to St. Croix Hospice for all the services provided. The peace that you brought to our dad is priceless.
Surely Jesus loves fishermen for He chose them for His own, to be with Him and learn from Him and someday share His home. It must have been their trust in God and patience He found rare, That keeps them very near His heart and ever in His care.

Phyllis J. Hass, 90, of Crown passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014 at GracePointe Crossing Gables East in Cambridge.

Phyllis J. Hass

Phyllis J. Hass

Phyllis Jean nee Swanson Hass was born Nov. 19, 1923 to William Swanson and Margaret nee Kilmartin Swanson of Zimmerman, Minn. She was the youngest of six children.

Phyllis graduated from Elk River High School and attended the Minnesota School of Business. Phyllis worked for one year as secretary to the president of American Linen Co. before she was required to move back to help her mother and brother in the family store: Swanson Mercantile in Zimmerman.

Although Phyllis proclaimed she would never marry a farmer, she did. Phyllis married Gordon Hass Dec. 1, 1945 at Zion of Crown.  Phyllis was baptized May 26, 1932 and confirmed into the LCMS church Nov. 30, 1946.

Phyllis’ marriage was blessed with six children. The children were raised to have God as their No. 1 priority. Phyllis and Gordon never forgot to have Jesus bless their meals.

Phyllis learned how to cook and bake after her marriage (as she worked in the store during her years in Zimmerman). Phyllis turned into a great cook and better baker—especially pies and cookies. Phyllis canned and preserved fruits and veggies her entire marriage—even in the fall of 2013.

Phyllis (and Gordon) had a very active social life and enjoyed people – especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Phyllis (and Gordon) spent countless hours watching different sports at different venues and on television. Phyllis (not Gordon) enjoyed the casino. She loved entertaining in her home. Her home with the meeting place for relatives on the Hass and Swanson sides of the family. Phyllis always seemed to be chilly and always dressed fashionably. She “loved Christmas” and her home at Christmastime reflected her love of the Christmas season. For many years, Phyllis would make wreaths at Nelson Nursery so she could indulge her family with gifts on Christmas.

Phyllis had many long-time and newly acquired friends and made every attempt to make visitors of Zion welcome. She was an active member of Zion and strong supporter of Crown Christian School.

Phyllis (Wife, Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Friend) will be greatly missed. She was pre-deceased by daughter, Donna, and Granddaughter Baby Girl Hass. She is survived by her husband, Gordon, of 68 years; children: Carol (Leon) Bray, Butch (Mary) Hass, Rick (Nancy) Hass, Larry (Mary) Hass and Joni (Ron) Sundeen, son-in-law, Mike Stephan, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 10 step- great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Gertrude (Bob) Wood, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church of Crown with Rev. Steve Tischer officiating. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, also at the church, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Pallbearers are her grandsons and Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters. Phyllis Nelson

Phyllis Mae Nelson, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at age 79 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, on March 8, 2014.

Phyllis was born Sept. 27, 1934 to Elmer and Gladys (Phillips) Longman in Madison, Minn. She attended Madison Schools and graduated in 1952. Phyllis was a caretaker at heart, so it wasnt surprising that she chose nursing as her occupation. She attended Swedish Hospital School of Nursing after high school, where she met classmates who would become life-long friends.

There were five special roommates who dubbed themselves the Specam-Maceps. (A title derived from a combination of letters in their names.) Phyllis met the love of her life, Gene Nelson, on a blind date in the fall of 1953 a set- up by one of her nursing-school friends.

Phyllis graduated from the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in September of 1955 and married Gene in August of 1956. They welcomed their son, Calvin Gene, into their family on June 22, 1957 and later, their daughter, Diane Marie on Nov. 26, 1960.

Phyllis practiced nursing at various locations early in her marriage including Minneapolis, Jackson and Benson, Minn. The family moved to Braham in 1967, where Phyllis and Gene raised their children and spent their remaining 52 years of marriage. Phyllis returned to nursing (after a season as homemaker) by working nights at Cambridge State Hospital. Later she worked as the Nurse in charge of the OR at Kanabec County Hospital in Mora, Minn. Phyllis finished her career at Mora.
Although Phyllis loved her job in Mora, her true passions were her church, family, friends, neighbors and hobbies. Phyllis was an avid gardener, raising vegetables, berries, fruit trees, herbs and flowers. She also loved animals and shared her garden with the deer and the bunnies. She often commented, Oh, I dont want to hurt them. I have enough to share. Phyllis loved pretty dishes, tea parties, crafting with her daughter and granddaughters, and quilting. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she went to great lengths to make it special. Her family will remember her special touches: baked goodies, delicious meals, cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning, Goodie bags on the Christmas tree, making gingerbread houses and her spirit of hospitality and celebration.

Throughout her life, Phyllis maintained a positive outlook; she always gave people the benefit of the doubt and believed the best. She was a private person, with a great sense of humor. She enjoyed pulling pranks, loved a good joke and was intensely devoted to prayer and her family.
Phyllis was an active member of the Braham Covenant Church serving in various capacities, such as: financial secretary, deaconess, adventure club treat-lady, and prayer team member.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Gladys Longman; husband, Gene; son, Calvin; brothers-in-law, Robert Nelson, Steven Latterell and Daniel Boenish.

Larry SoutherlandCounty Commissioner Larry Southerland, 63, of Cambridge died March 19, 2014 at home surrounded by family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, at the Braham Area Community Center, 655 8th Street SW with Rev. Richard Chronis officiating.  A visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Strike Funeral Home – Cambridge Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at the community center on Monday.  Interment will be in Rice Lake Cemetery in Braham.

Larry was born October 3, 1950 and raised in Braham, Minn. during the baby boom of the 1950s and 1960s, Larry followed his parents’ example of dedication, diligence and hard work in his public service career. He was a dedicated and hard working public servant and worked tirelessly for Isanti County and his community. Following college courses at St. Cloud State he joined the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department working his way up from dispatcher to deputy to investigator, serving 19 years in those capacities.

In 1990, when the then current sheriff retired, Larry was elected Isanti County Sheriff and served three terms (12 years) before ending his 31-year law enforcement career. He continued on in public service, however. In 2002, Larry was elected to the County Board and served as 2nd District Commissioner for over 12 years.

Larry embraced his role as an ombudsman county commissioner, immersed himself in his community work. He had a focus on transportation, public safety and job growth. He was a strong advocate for the multi-county NLX Passenger Rail Alliance Planning Committee, the Local Collaborative, the Isanti County Ag Society (Fair Board), the Braham Community Center and preservation of the historic St John’s Church. In 2004 Larry received the Isanti County Human Rights Award.

County Commissioner Larry L. Southerland, age 63, of Isanti County died March 19, 2014 at his Springvale Township home following a brief, but determined battle with cancer. He is survived by his brother and sister in law, Lee and Donna Southerland and their children, Leah Southerland and Cindy (Matt) Boe; niece, Crystal Mattson; aunt, Deloris Anderson; uncle, LeRoy (Joanne) Anderson; cousins and other relatives; special friends, Cherri Carpenter and Jenny (Cory) Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Lorraine Southerland and his sister, Lana Mattson and brother-in-law, Craig Mattson.
Larry was born October 3, 1950 and raised in Braham, MN during the baby boom of the 1950s and 1960s. Larry followed his parents example of dedication, diligence and hard work in his public service career. He was a dedicated and hard working public servant and worked tirelessly for Isanti County and his community. Following college courses at St. Cloud State he joined the Isanti County Sheriffs Department working his way up from dispatcher to deputy to investigator, serving 19 years in those capacities.
He was a strong advocate for the multi-county NLX Passenger Rail Alliance Planning Committee, the Local Collaborative, the Isanti County Ag Society (Fair Board), the Braham Community Center and preservation of the historic St. Johns Church. In 2004 Larry received the Isanti County Human Rights Award.

Robert Tillman

Robert Bob Gregory Tillman was born Nov. 17, 1951 and was raised in Milbank, S.D. by his parents Gerald and Melba (Siede) Tillman.
He started his schooling in music but finished with degrees in Chemistry, Nursing and Anesthesia.
After searching long and hard, Bob met the love of his life, Nancy Christensen while she was attending UMM. They were married in 1979. They were blessed with 3 beautiful daughters, all of whom Bob believes the sun rises and sets on. They moved to Florida after Bob completed his anesthesia schooling, living in Port St. Lucie for 3 years, then moving on to Cambridge, Minn. where they lived and raised their family for 24 years.
Bob worked at the Cambridge Medical Center. In 2007, he and Nancy set out on an adventure by building a new home in Alexandria, Minn. from which Bob worked doing locums, traveling to help out in hospitals that were short staffed. It was a wonderful experience to live and work in different states while experiencing what each state had to offer. As an independent contractor, Bob worked at Douglas County Hospital and the last 2 years of work were at Stevens Medical Center in Morris, the location of his very first job back in 1974. Bob had a deep commitment for anesthesia, a sincere camaraderie with the people he worked with, and deep compassion for the patients he cared for. Bobs love for his career inspired him to continue working all through the duration of his illness!
Bob poured his heart and soul; however, into the love and relationships he shared with his wife Nancy and daughters. In 2011, Bob and Nancy purchased a gift shop in Alexandria, Minn., and 11 days later he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. Although devastated, this strong family love became the bedrock that supported them all through the next difficult stages of life. Quickly Bob discovered the strength and depth of this bond. For the past 3 years endearingly has referred to his wife and daughters as his Wonder Women, as they always stood by his side and loved him so.
Bob was an avid sportsman. He had great respect for the land and the animals that were a gift to all. Many friends and family will remember outings to deer camp, turkey hunting, duck hunting season, Lake of the Woods fishing trips, Boundary Water canoe trips, snowmobiling and other outdoor adventures. All with a sense of humor and no sense of direction.
Bob died Monday, March 17, 2014 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria, MN at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters, Brooke (Scott) Tillman/Sievers, Stacy (Ted) Anderson, and Lindsey (Andy) Werner; 7 grandsons; his father, Gerald Tillman; 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Bob is preceded in death by his mother, Melba.
A funeral service was held Friday, March 21, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Interment was at Geneva Cemetery in Alexandria.
Memorials are preferred to the family to be used for Bobs Pay It Forward Fund that the family will continue.
Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
