Jason Wyatt Barrett

Jason Barrett passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at his home in Rock Creek at the age of 57.
Jason Wyatt Barrett was born to Ernie and Sally (Nelson) Barrett on September 30, 1958 in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1959, he and his family moved to central Minnesota. Jason attended school in both North Branch and Cambridge. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Army; he earned his GED while stationed in Colorado. He was also stationed in Germany.
Earlier in his life Jason was employed with Old Dutch and the State Hospital; however, for the last 30+ years he had been a mail carrier, starting out in Harris and later in Taylors Falls. He loved shopping in Taylors Falls at the Market Place and Menards, because he always had cooking or home projects in the works.
Jason was the organizer, he planned the family’s time together, whether it was a bar-b-que or a bonfire he made sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Jason mastered many games and was very competitive; playing cards and cribbage or winning trophies shooting pool. He loved Mexican food, telling stories and spending time with the grandchildren.
To say Jason was an avid sports fan and outdoors man would be an understatement. He had season tickets for the Minnesota Vikings in their new stadium where there is a plaque with his family’s names on it. April loved joining him at the football games. It wasn’t only football, he went to Twins games too. He loved everything about the outdoors; fishing, hunting, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling to the Lake of Woods, Canada and most recently to the Florida Keys where he and Laura experienced deep sea fishing. Jason was also proficient at bow hunting and hunted Elk in Colorado and Caribou in Alaska.
When he wasn’t watching a game, hunting or fishing he could be found on his way to Sturgis on his Harley or working on the Barrett Hobby Farm; making apple wine, tending to his bees or building a chicken coop.
Jason rarely sat still, he built an addition and deck on his house, remodeled his office or “man cave” as he liked to call it. When he started a project or learned a new skill he wanted to master it no matter what it was. He did the work of five men as he always thought he wasn’t accomplishing enough.
He lived life to the fullest and on his terms, Jason loved his family and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Laura Barrett of Rock Creek; children, Jason Barrett Jr. of Osceola, Wisconsin, Amanda Barrett of Brainerd, NaTrisha Handt and April Handt of Pine City; grandchildren, Jade, Elizabeth, Mariah, Olivia, Gavin and Connor; siblings, Angela Laurie of Fargo, North Dakota, Rhonda (Mike) Thompson of Stacy, Jarod (Kathy) Barrett of North Branch, Susan (James) Rice of Wyoming, Valorie (Kevin Andrews) Shepherd of Rochester; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ernie and Sally Barrett and son Brian Barrett.
Pending funeral arrangements for Jason Barrett are entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service ~ Swanson Chapel, Pine City, Minnesota. www.funeralandcremationservice.com

George W. Pettit, Sr.

George Wesley Pettit, Sr., age 90, of Blaine, went to be home with his Lord on Friday, April 29, 2016.
George Wesley Pettit, Sr., was born on Sept. 16, 1925 to George Wesley and Mildred Leona (Guptill) Pettit in Oregon City, Ore., joining sister Nathalie. After his father died young, he was raised by stepfather Oliver Jacobson. George enlisted in the Army in April 1945 and over the course of his military career, he served in three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He spent the majority of his career overseas, including Okinawa, Japan right after the war, the Virgin Islands, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. In 1971, he was in Vietnam while his eldest son was also serving there. George began his career as a radar repairman and ended it as a trainer in Fort Bliss, Texas in August 1971. After his retirement from the Army, he worked for a charitable organization in Spokane, Wash. for 15 years before he finally retired for good.
George met Leona Mae Pollard in Erie, Pa. and married her seven days later on Feb. 17, 1950. They lived throughout the U.S. and the world while he was in the Army, deployed sometimes for a year or two at a time. Their adventures included four years in Germany. Three of George’s sons followed him into the military. He was a lifelong member of the VFW.
His children remember him as a man who was fiercely patriotic. The Army enabled him to serve his country while providing for his large family. He was dedicated to God, to his family and to his country.
George was an avid bowler, and was a member of the Alley Cats bowling team at Ham Lake Lanes for over 20 years. Just a few weeks before he died, he bowled a 200 game, and they shut down the alley to recognize him. He will be featured in a bowling magazine in May.
He loved to dance, and would dance with his daughters standing on his feet. When they were young, he played the harmonica. While living in Idaho, he enjoyed hunting for big game with members of his church. His children and grandchildren are spread out across the United States in seven states, but he worked to keep in touch with them, praying steadfastly for all and spending his vacations with them. He enjoyed spending Father’s Day at Back to the 50s, and could name every car. He spent Thursday nights over the past 20 years with his eldest son George Pettit, Jr. watching television, chatting about life, and serving his “famous” cooking.
His church was an important part of his life, and he met with six grandchildren for over 20 years to teach Bible lessons. He was a person who would help whenever there was a need; he’d give away money, fix your car or let a child move back home for awhile.
George Pettit Sr. passed away in his sleep 16 days after being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
He is survived by children George Pettit, Jr. (Beverly) of Isanti, Minn., Cathy Finnesgard (Mark), Virgil Pettit, Doreen Stroud (Carey), Rebecca Tricaglou (George), Paul Pettit (Amy) and Mark Pettit (Alana); 18 grandchildren, including Joel (Elizabeth) Pettit of Isanti and Jesse (Tesha) Pettit of Minneapolis; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Leona (2012), daughter Elizabeth (at birth) and son John (1993).
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 2, 11 a.m., at Blaine Baptist Church, 46 – 117th Avenue NE, Blaine. A time for visiting was one hour prior. Luncheon followed at the VFW hall off of Hwy. 65 and 109th. Interment at Isanti Union Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at StrikeFuneral.com.

Renee Oquist

Renee Oquist, of Braham, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in the early morning of May 7, 2016. She chose to rejoin her beloved father, Erick, on his birthday.
Renee was born Clare Renee Siljendahl on February 1, 1929, in Minneapolis to Erick and Esther (Hedman) Siljendahl. She grew up on the family farm in Spring Vale, MN; attending school in Cambridge through her junior year. The family then made the decision to move closer to town, settling into a humble home in Braham. Renee completed her senior year in Braham, graduating in 1948. Soon after, while making her way in the world, she met a tall, handsome man who would become her husband. Renee and Trygve Lervik were married in April of 1951. This joyful union also made her the mother to Trygve’s three year old son, Thomas. The years to follow brought much joy, including the birth of two more children, Brett and Barbara. The fairy tale ended too soon when Trygve died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1956.
Newly widowed, Renee relied on her strength, as she was determined to be a good mother even in the face of tragedy. As fate would have it, she wouldn’t have to do it alone. Lightning struck a second time, and love intervened again. She met Edwin Oquist on what could have just been another ordinary day. She was taken with his blue eyes and gentle ways. He too, was quickly smitten; having gone home to ask his niece, Joyce, if she would teach him to dance, explaining he had met a wonderful woman who loved dancing. His kindness and dancing skills were more than she bargained for. The romantic whirlwind led to a fruitful marriage that spanned four decades. They welcomed the birth of four more children into their lives. Their brood grew from three to seven by 1963 with the addition of Beverly, Bonnie, Brian, and Brenda.
Renee loved family gatherings, and often opened her home to entertaining. She was the life of any party and the ‘Hostess with the Mostess.’
Renee was preceded in death by her parents Erick and Esther Siljendahl; brother, Clifford Siljendahl; husbands, Trygve Lervik and Edwin Oquist; children, Thomas Lervik, Brett Lervik, and Brenda Oquist.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Siljendahl; children, Barbara Lervik of Minneapolis, Beverly Oquist of Braham, Bonnie and Robert Dallman of Braham, and Brian and Michelle Oquist of Braham; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as countless other family and friends.
She loved deeply, listened intently and cared endlessly. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Braham Ev. Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Rice Lake Cemetery in Braham. Arrangements are by the Rock Ingebrand Funeral Home of Braham. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.
